Registering with the municipality: how does it actually work?

Did you know?

If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, don’t forget to register yourself with the municipality! You must do this within 5 days of arrival. But don’t worry, it’s very easy! Make an appointment with the municipality, and they will ensure that you receive a Citizen Service Number (BSN) and get registered in the Personal Records Database.

The BSN is your personal key to a lot of important things here in the Netherlands. It is necessary to use for applications such as health insurance, employment, housing allowance, and tax matters. Without a BSN, it is not allowed to work in the Netherlands. So make sure you don’t forget this and take care of it as soon as possible!
