Tax Returns 2026

How to Maximize Your Income as an Employee

The spring season is the perfect time for many in the Netherlands to settle their financial accounts. Although the annual income tax return can feel like an administrative burden, it is a significant opportunity for every employee—and especially for those working as temporary workers. Particularly in dynamic labor regions such as Amsterdam, Hoofddorp, and the rest of Noord-Holland, we see that many workers leave money on the table. Filing a tax return isn’t just about paying taxes; in many cases, it’s a way to check if you overpaid the tax authorities during the past year.

For those who work flexibly, annual income can fluctuate. Perhaps you worked full-time in logistics around Hoofddorp for a few months, took a break, or combined different jobs in the Alkmaar or Haarlem regions. With such varying incomes, there is a high chance that the payroll tax withheld monthly does not exactly match your final annual income. The Tax Authorities often calculate based on averages; if your situation changes during the year, you often get a portion of the withheld tax back. At Staffice, we understand that a successful match is about more than just work; it’s about the human factor and ensuring your personal affairs are well-managed.

Accessing Your Digital Tax Affairs

Before you can see if a refund is waiting for you, you need secure access to the government’s online environment. This is done via DigiD. You can think of this as a digital passport that allows you to log in to authorities like the Tax Office or the UWV. Don’t have a DigiD yet? Request it in time, as the activation code is sent by post. We don’t beat around the bush: without DigiD, you cannot manage your affairs digitally, so take that first step today.

Once your DigiD is active, you can log in to ‘Mijn Belastingdienst.’ From March onwards, your pre-filled tax return will be ready for you. The Tax Authorities already receive information from employers and banks. Opening this return does not commit you to anything. You simply go through the steps to see the calculation: does it show you are getting money back? Then filing the return is just a matter of a few clicks. If it shows you have to pay extra, but you haven’t received an official invitation (tax return letter), you are often not required to file unless the amount exceeds the legal limit. Our proactive stance is: always check it so you know exactly where you stand.

Healthcare Allowance and Income Limits

In addition to income tax, there is the healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag): a monthly contribution from the government to keep your health insurance affordable. Many employees mistakenly think they are no longer entitled to this once they find a job. However, the amount of the healthcare allowance depends on your total annual income. If your income remains below a certain limit (this limit is determined annually by the government), you are almost always entitled to this allowance.

It pays to click through to the benefits portal while doing your tax return. If you didn’t receive a healthcare allowance last year, but your income was lower than the set limit, you can still apply for it retroactively. This can involve significant amounts that you would otherwise miss out on. We believe it’s important that you get what you’re entitled to so you can work with pleasure and without administrative hassle.

Keeping a Grip on Your Finances as an Employee

Filing a return gives you insight into your financial position. For employees in Noord-Holland starting through Staffice, we aim to make this process transparent. When starting a new position, we ask about the payroll tax credit (loonheffingskorting). This credit ensures you keep more of your net salary immediately. Note: only apply this credit at one employer at a time to prevent having to pay back tax later.

By logging in to the Tax Authorities every year, you prevent surprises. It is the ideal moment to check if your annual statements are correct. At Staffice, we stand for integrity and personal guidance; if you have questions about your payslip or how we support you as an employer, we are happy to assist. Together, we ensure you can grow and thrive in your work.
